Hurrah! BT drops Phorm

Posted on Jul 6th by William in Customer service

Hurrah! BT has dropped the intrusive Webwise targetted advertising system developed by Phorm. I had the dubious honour of being named in the attack web site StopPhoulPlay with which Phorm tried to win friends and influence people.

The only worry is that even more unscrupulous and shadowy players will now try to use deep packet inspection techniques to snoop on everything we do online. They do it because they want to make money out of spying on our personal preferences, or to control our lives. Both are unacceptable intentions, and the practice is rightly illegal. BT should have had nothing to do with it. Now they’ve dropped it, all is forgiven.

Well done Jim, Michael, Richard, Nick and everyone else who helped at Open Rights Group and at the FIPR.
