Gordon Brown echoes Michael Foot

In the “longest suicide note in history” 1983 Labour manifesto Michael Foot promised the UK a national, broadband network. But Mrs Thatcher won of course. Now, in an article in the Daily Telegraph, Gordon Brown promises:
targeted, strategic action by government…to bring super-fast connections to households and businesses to every corner of the country
Of course we want better broadband in our village. But – hang on – we didn’t have any power here for last two days, and so no heating. The trains aren’t running. The road isn’t gritted; only tractors and 4×4s cab make it through. The country isn’t fit for weird weather.

And even when the snow clears, the nearest school won’t take children from our side of the parish boundary (and is overcrowded anyway). You’d have to go miles and miles to find a state school place, or an NHS dentist. And the country’s broke: massively in debt. It makes you yearn for “back to basics”.

aye, we need the basics. We have most of them, good power (normally) fresh water, local food for anyone who wants to buy it instead of imported crap and a good education system if gov would stop interfering with it. All we really need is broadband that works, but gordon can wish all he likes, it won’t happen until somebody has the nerve to boot ofcom out and jfdi. all these consultations and reports do is waste time and money. Replace the copper with fibre and be done. Gov should do the rural areas, the market will take care of the urban ones. Then in times like this when the nation is at a standstill the schools can still teach, the office work will still get done, but without the travel involved. Much more efficient use of resources.
Sorry about your power outage, hope you get it back soon!
Maybe if we get the money back off the bankers we could get the digitalbritain infrastructure we need?
Let us hope when they sell off the spectrum it goes into the NGA pot and not the bankers bottomless pot.
